 Healthy Home Tips

Look at the members in your family and the nearby environment as you begin to evaluate ways to improve your home environment.

The following types of people are at greatest risk:
Toddlers and Infants, Elderly people, Allergy or Asthma Sufferers, Pregnant women, Individuals with a Compromised Immune System (Cancer patients, AIDS patients).

  1. Make sure every entrance to your home has a doormat.
  2. Keep the area around the entrances of your home clean of debris.
  3. The best kind of doormat is commercial quality.  Although it is tempting to buy something because it is stylish, think about your families health first.   Avoid coco fiber (Coir) mats, they shed and track loose fibers into your home.  Also avoid rope, rubber, plastic mats, wood and metal.  These mats provide a reservoir for microbes and pollutants.
  4. Regularly shake out your mat (NOT in your home, outside only) vacuum and if you need to wash your doormat,  follow the Dr. Doormat care instructions.
  5. Wipe your shoes twice on your Dr. Doormat to remove up to 99% of the debris on your shoes.
  6. Take your street shoes off and replace them with house shoes that have good support if you can.  Some members of your family can’t easily take their shoes off (the physically challenged may be wearing orthopedic shoes using a walker or cane, babies just walking need shoes.  Mommies and Daddies carrying a baby up and down the steps regularly need to wear a good supportive shoe.)
  7. Teach your young children to wipe their shoes and make a game of it.  “I taught my 2 year old daughter how to wipe her shoes and now she thinks of Dr. Doormat as her superhero.  He protects our house from all the dirt and germs.  When we walk up to the front door, I tell her to say hello Dr. Doormat, wipe, wipe, wipe, and she does.”
Pet Owners Corner

  1. Pet owners need to keep pets well groomed.
  2. If you are using a doggie door use a large Dr. Doormat to provide a large enough walk off area for your pet to make contact with the antimicrobial treated surface and remove debris and microbes from their paws.
  3. Whatever entrance you use for your pets, make sure you provide a good walk off area to remove the pollutants from their paws and prevent track-in to your beautiful sanctuary.
  4. Keep a litter box for cats on one end of the Dr. Doormat and leave room for the cat to walk out of the litter box onto the other end of the mat.  The channels in the mat will allow loose cat litter to fall to the bottom and not block the surface.
  5. Regularly shake out your mat (NOT in your home, outside only) vacuum and if you need to wash your doormat,  follow the Dr. Doormat care instructions.
  6. When pets are wet from the rain and come into your home make sure you dry them off thoroughly.  Moisture and warm temperatures provide a breeding ground for microbes and perfect environment to thrive and infest your home and your pet.

Did you know?
  • Lead and toxins are tracked into your home on your shoes.
  • Purchasing a home with a central air/ heating system? Make sure you have the duct work sucked out before you move in.
  • Doing construction in your home? Cover the vents with cheese cloth to trap the dust and debris and prevent it from circulating through the house.
