Home Detox – Balancing the Elements: Air

Shelter is one of the basic needs we humans have for survival. Our homes serve to protect us from the elements, keeping us warm and safe.

Unfortunately, many homes are built with materials that cause more harm then we realize. In the 70’s there was a big push to build homes tighter and more closed to be efficient when it comes to heating and cooling. This was accomplished – but as a result, the homes did not “breathe” as well.

Detox you indoor air by keeping oxygen-releasing plants.

One of the outcomes of this is that the indoor air in our homes, on average, is 5 times more polluted then the outdoor air because many of the toxins are trapped in the home and our homes provide a perfect breeding ground for microbes and other pollutants to build up and grow. With other factors in play such as chemical-laden cleaners and synthetic products, our homes can easily become a very toxic environment if we’re not careful.

Detoxifying the air in your home is one of the most important things you can do for the health of your family. The air you are constantly breathing should be as pure and clean as possible: fortunately, there are a few ways you can achieve cleaner air in your home.

  • Stop using artificial fragrances. Chemical air fresheners “trick” our brains into thinking we’re breathing clean air, but the fact is that many of the ingredients in them are toxic. There are healthier, more natural ways of making your home smell inviting. Burn essential oils in a candle oil burner or simmer spices on the stove for awhile.
  • Let fresh air in. Open the windows when you can to allow more circulation – even in the winter. It makes all the difference in the world for your indoor air quality.
  • Don’t allow smoking in your home.
  • Regularly change the filters in your heating and cooling systems.
  • Use natural cleaners – you can even make your own! There isn’t much you can’t clean with vinegar and baking soda!
  • Keep houseplants. Indoor plants release oxygen, keeping your air fresher and cleaner.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll share ways to continue detoxing your home by balancing the other elements: earth, fire, and water.

May Every Step You Take Be Healthy!
