College Life – A Clean Beginning!

I am please to introduce our first guest writer.  Ms. Samara Green, a freelance writer from the Huffington Post and College Freshman at Barnard College, Columbia University in New York City.

 College Life A Clean Beginning!

Samara called us while in the midst of a major shopping spree at Bed Bath & Beyond, outfitting her new urban dorm room.  She spotted Dr. Doormat and although she claims to not be a germophobe or allergy sufferer, she realized the benefits of keeping her new digs clean.  At Bed Bath, Samara saw the Autumn Red apartment size mat as an option on the box but the store only carried Charcoal gray.  Samara quickly scanned the QR code on the box to locate us and called to order the Autumn Red mat for her big move.   Samara said, “Living in an urban environment at college is a big change and I really don’t want all that city street grime in my new dorm room.”  We’re so excited to be a part of Samara’s first step into college life and what better way to start.  We are sure Dr. Doormat will serve her well and help to provide Samara and her new roommate with the first line of defense against allergens, harmful pollutants and microorganisms in her new world.

 College Life A Clean Beginning!

Surrounded by all of her new things after a major shopping spree at Bed Bath & Beyond.

The empty room greeted me. It was small and echoed with our voices. Lizzie and I ran up to see where we would live for the next 10 months. I had arrived at my college dorm. A day I had dreamed about for years had finally come. The space was pregnant with all my hopes and dreams. Will I make lifelong friends? What will I study? Can I manage the workload and still have fun? Where will I study abroad? Will I speak about this time nostalgically as my parents and their college friends do whenever they speak of their college years? Almost reverent, they conjure up images of crazy parties (hard to believe knowing my parents), and meaningful friendships that still endure—I know this because I have met some of these friends, friends that started relationships with my parents over 35 years ago.

Samara’s New Dorm Room

So, now I gaze through the portal of Room 721 into my new life. The clean slate, the “tabula rasa” that is my life now. It’s the bare shelves, the empty drawers, and the open closet that will be filled anyway I decide to fill them. I get to choose it all. The options are overwhelming to me and I catch my breath, nervous and excited at the same time. I glance out the window to the majestic buildings in the distance, topped with gryphons and gargoyles, like security guards cautioning me for the road’s perils. I unpack my clothing, hang the shoe bag and put up my photos and favorite knick-knacks to remind me of home and family. Then, I symbolically place my Dr. Doormat at the entrance; I wipe three times and enter. I am off to the official start of my new life, the blank sheet of paper, the start of something new, not just figuratively, but literally as well, truly a clean beginning.

When we heard Ms. Green’s story we invited her to share with us her perspective on beginning college life.   So often we focus on young children going back to school and health risks and concerns associated with little ones crawling on the floor.  They do grow up!

We are so proud to be able to give our customers peace of mind and be a part of some of the biggest milestones in their lives, whether it’s beginning the first year of college or coming home from the hospital with a new baby.
